Offida is a walled hill town in southern Marche, in the province of Ascoli Piceno, set on a rocky spur between the Tesino and Tronto valleys. It is listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy and is worth visiting for three things you will not find together anywhere else: bobbin lace still made in the streets, the Romanesque-Gothic church of Santa Maria della Rocca, and Offida DOCG wine.
We are Sweet Life Italy, a Marche tour operator run by Marco and Ilaria, who live in the region, and we design private Marche tours that often include the Piceno hills. This guide covers what to see in Offida, current opening hours and tickets, how to get there with or without a car, what to eat and drink, and how to fit the town into a wider trip.

Where is Offida, Italy?
Offida is in the far south of the Marche region, in the hills between Ascoli Piceno and the Adriatic coast. The old town stands on a rocky spur carved out by the two branches of the Lama stream, still enclosed by medieval walls with towers, according to Italia.it, Italy’s official tourism site.
The area around it is called the Piceno, after the ancient Picenes who lived here before the Romans. From the edge of town the views run over vineyards and olive groves toward the Sibillini Mountains and nearby Monte dell’Ascensione, as the Borghi più Belli d’Italia association notes, and that association lists Offida among the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Is Offida worth visiting?
Yes, especially if you like small towns with real local life rather than souvenir streets. Offida packs a 14th-century cliff-top church, a triangular piazza, a jewel-box theater recognized by UNESCO in 2026, a lace museum and the regional wine shop of Marche into a walkable old center.
It is also one of the few places in Italy where a craft defines the town. Bobbin lace (merletto a tombolo) has been made here for centuries, and you can still see lacemakers at work with wooden bobbins on their cushions in doorways and small workshops, as Italia.it describes. Add a glass of Pecorino at the end of the day and Offida easily earns its place in a southern Marche itinerary.

Santa Maria della Rocca

This is the most important monument in Offida and the reason many people come. The church stands on a steep cliff at the edge of town, on the site of a Lombard-era castle that was given to the Abbey of Farfa in 1039; work to demolish the castle and build the larger church began in 1330, according to Italia.it.
Go down first. The crypt spans the whole area of the church above, with three aisles of brick columns and 14th-century frescoes, many attributed to the Master of Offida. Upstairs, the single nave keeps frescoes in the apse by the Milanese master Ugolino di Vanne. On the crypt staircase, look for a small lamb carved into one of the steps: local tradition says it brings visitors good luck, the Comune di Offida notes.
Hours and tickets (valid until 30 November 2026): Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 18:30; closed Monday to Friday. Entry is €4. Hours change by season, so check the official page or call the tourist office on +39 334 154 7890 before you go.
Piazza del Popolo and the town hall
The heart of Offida is an unusual triangular square lined with buildings in different styles and materials. On its main side is the Palazzo Comunale, with an elegant loggia of thirteen travertine columns and a 15th-century brick portico, Italia.it explains. The 18th-century Collegiata church also faces the square.
Teatro Serpente Aureo, now a UNESCO site

Through the town hall portico you reach one of the loveliest small theaters in Marche. It was built in 1820 to a design by architect Pietro Maggi and renovated in 1862, with a horseshoe plan, three tiers of boxes (50 in all) and a gallery. The ceiling, showing Apollo with three Muses, was painted by Alcide Allevi and framed with gilded stucco on a green ground. On 26 July 2026 the theater was recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage, together with the other historic theaters of Marche, according to the Comune di Offida. We wrote more about this network in our post on Marche’s UNESCO theaters.
Visits: by booking on +39 334 154 7890; tickets cost €3.
The lace museum and Palazzo De Castellotti
An 18th-century noble palace on Via Roma holds four museums under one ticket: the Museum of Popular Traditions in the basement, and the Civic Art Gallery, the Bobbin Lace Museum and the G. Allevi Archaeological Museum on the first floor. It was last renovated in 2022 and is free of architectural barriers, the Comune reports.
The lace museum opened in 1998 and fills seven rooms with tools, threads, designs, wedding trousseaus and tablecloths. Its best-known piece is the dress Naomi Campbell wore in London in 1997, designed by Antonio Berardi and made by the lacemakers of Offida, according to the town’s tourism site. Italia.it adds that the lace museum has a route designed for visually impaired visitors. The archaeological rooms show Picene bronzes, weapons and pottery found by the 19th-century archaeologist Guglielmo Allevi.
Hours and tickets (valid until 30 November 2026): Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 18:30; €4.50 for the whole museum complex (Comune di Offida).
The walls, the Rocca and the Lacemakers’ Monument

Offida’s walls were built between the 12th and 13th centuries and once surrounded the whole town. Today you see the old tower that guarded the entrance, a square tower and another round tower, all from the 15th century. The Rocca was designed by Baccio Pontelli for Pope Innocent VIII, whose coat of arms is still at the top. Below the walls stands the bronze Monument to the Lacemakers, made in 1983 by the Offida sculptor Aldo Sergiacomi, showing three women working at their cushions (Visit Offida).

See our private Marche tours to get an idea of how we work.
What is Offida famous for?
Offida is famous for bobbin lace, its wines, and its historic carnival. Each one is a good reason to plan your visit around it.
Offida DOCG wine

Offida gave its name to a wine appellation: a DOC in 2001 and a DOCG, Italy’s highest category, since 2011. The Offida DOCG has three types: Offida Pecorino and Offida Passerina, both whites made from at least 85 percent of their grape, and Offida Rosso, made from at least 85 percent Montepulciano, according to the Consorzio Vini Piceni, the wine consortium based in Offida. More than 20 wineries work within the town’s boundaries (Borghi più Belli d’Italia).
The easiest place to start is the Enoteca Regionale delle Marche, the region’s official wine shop, in the former monastery of San Francesco. Hundreds of local labels can be tasted with a sommelier and bought, and the best Marche wines are kept in sandstone caves that were rediscovered under the old convent cellar in 2003, the Marche Region explains. Since December 2021 Offida has also hosted the Oleoteca Regionale, the regional olive oil collection. For a deeper wine trip, see our Italy food and wine tours.
The Carnival of Offida (Lu Bov Fint and Li Vlurd)
Offida’s carnival is not a parade you watch from the sidewalk. It opens on 17 January, the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot, and peaks with two rituals: on Shrove Friday the “fake ox” (lu bov fint), a frame covered in a white sheet, charges through the alleys and Piazza del Popolo in a mock bullfight; on Shrove Tuesday, burning bundles of reeds and straw (li vlurd) are carried through the center to light a bonfire in the square, as Italia.it describes. Locals wear the guazzarò, a white smock with a red neckerchief.
For 2027, the official carnival program lists the opening on Sunday 17 January, Lu Bov Fint on Friday 5 February from 14:30, and the lighting of the Vlurd on Tuesday 9 February at 19:00.
What to eat in Offida
Try the chichì ripieno, a focaccia filled with tuna, anchovies, capers and peppers, and the funghetti, small anise cookies shaped like mushrooms, Italia.it recommends. The funghetto became an official De.C.O. product of the town in 2015, and the local after-dinner pair is mistrà, an anise liqueur, with vino cotto, a wine made from cooked grape must (Borghi più Belli d’Italia). Pair everything with a glass of Offida Pecorino.
How to get to Offida
A car or a private driver is by far the easiest way; public transport works but needs planning. Offida is about half an hour’s drive from Ascoli Piceno through the hills (Italia.it).

From there, Start bus line 09 runs to Offida via Acquaviva Picena in about 40 minutes. Runs are few and many are timed for school days, so check the current Start timetable before you travel.
- From Ascoli Piceno by bus: Start lines 08, 15, 16 and 17 connect Ascoli and Offida (Start).
- From Rome: drive about 3 hours to Ascoli, or take the Start coach from Rome to Ascoli and change there (Comune di Ascoli Piceno).
- Airports: the closest are Pescara and Ancona, both with frequent trains to San Benedetto del Tronto (Comune di Ascoli Piceno).
